ASDA travels to AGD’s annual meeting

Over the weekend, ASDA was warmly welcomed at the 60th Annual Meeting of the Academy of General Dentistryin Philadelphia, PA. Our members were represented by yours truly and our tireless Vice Presidents: Alex Barton, Virginia ’13, and Ben Youel, Illinois ’13.

Greetings from ASDA

The City of Brotherly Love welcomed AGD delegates and members from across the country. Just like ASDA’s Annual Session, we witnessed the election and installation of their 2012-13 officers. Thanks to each of them for being so hospitable and inspiring.

Congratulations to newly installed AGD President Dr. Jeffrey Cole!

We also met up with members from UPenn and Temple at events like the Exhibit Fair, a CE course, and a free dental clinic on Saturday that was set up by AGD and its foundation to meet the needs of hundreds of Philadelphians.

Back in Chicago, our Executive Director Nancy Honeycutt was busy being celebrated by the Chicagoland Forum with their 2012 Inspiring Leader Award. We are so proud of you, Nancy!

Have you interacted with your state or local AGD constituent? Ever considered joining the AGD Student FellowTrack program? I highly recommend exploring both options!

I read the article at Philly.com about the AGD free clinic--how disappointing the author chose to approach the story from that angle. Yes, there is a health care disparity and in America that can't be ignored. However, The Philadelphia Inquirer clearly took the liberty of mangling a press release about a very positive event taking place in there city. The real story here is that dentists donate their own time and money to help meet the need, and it's disheartening when the author chooses to say only this about the event: "The hygienic scent of dentistry around him was only deepening his anxiety." "More than 500 patients entered an imposing room filled with rows of dental chairs. Another 500 or so were turned away. And hundreds more were placed on a waiting list." "A team of 188 volunteer dentists and hygienists worked to fill the gaps in the region's dental care - at least for a day." This is a challenge you we will all face in our careers. Dentists do serve, but if the mainstream media get its way...you'll never hear about it.
