Early ASDA members at convention
1969—The Vietnam War rages on. Man walks on the moon. John Lennon and Yoko Ono stage their famous Bed-In. Gap Jeans opens in San Francisco. Woodstock. And where were dental students at this time? They were doing what all college students seemed to do in the last year of that decade. They were organizing.
Forty years ago, dental students came together to form a collective voice. Today, that voice is still heard but the channels have changed over time. The American Student Dental Association still stands for the advocacy efforts and the student support that founded the organization in 1969. Instead of staging protests or large-scale music festivals, ASDA has turned to less extreme means of communication. We have two print publications, two electronic publications and a darn good website. But now it’s time for something new; something a little different.
Enter mouthing off: the blog of the American Student Dental Association. In a world where you can wear your heart on your hashtag and “unfriend” just made word of the year in the New Oxford American Dictionary, it’s important to keep up. ASDA still wants to be there for you when you need an advocate in dental school, but we want to be your Facebook friend too. We want to connect with you in a way that feels real. And these days, nothing is more real than the high-speed connections made online.
This blog can be many things. It can be a place to post news, events and updates on association happenings. It can also be a place to exchange ideas. And finally, we hope it’s a place where we can have some fun. This is like the dinner dance at the end of Annual Session—it’s still part of the meeting, but it’s ok to unwind and have a good time. So put on your party shoes and tell all your dental student buddies that mouthing off is officially open for business.
