If you’re asking yourself how you’ll manage a practice, stay on top of dental trends and be a respected leader with no formal training, you’re not alone. Like many dental students, by the time you graduate you’ve mastered the clinical aspects of dentistry but you’re pretty green when it comes to being a professional. So, what are you to do: wait until you’re a dentist and see what happens or do something about it now?
ASDA created the National Leadership Conference (Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Chicago) to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world by providing leadership training to dental students and predentals.
Tiffany Hsu, San Francisco ’15, chair, ASDA Council on Communications, attended NLC last year and will be back again in October. “To me, developing myself as a professional is just as important as learning all the skills I need for practicing dentistry. Along with being a fantastic dentist, I want to become a leader in oral health.”
Here are three reasons why you should register to attend NLC this year:
- Meet dental students from nearly every U.S. dental school:“At NLC, networking opportunities arise from breakout sessions, breaks between sessions, meal times, and socials,” says Hsu. “It also comes from meeting people at the exhibit fair or standing in line at the bathroom. Believe me, networking is everywhere you want it to be, and it is up to you to take advantage of it.”
- Develop your business and leadership skills: Breakout topics led by practicing dentists and past ASDA leaders focus on how to hire (and lead) a dental team, working through conflict, best practices for marketing yourself, the power of networking and more. The conference offers four educational tracks, each with a variety of sessions to choose from, and several keynote presentations.
- Know what your options are: More than 40 exhibitors are anxious to share information about their latest products and services with you. It’s important to know what’s available in the market once you’re practicing. Plus, stop by booths from eight different dental associations to learn how you can get more involved in organized dentistry.
