GCA networkingAnnual Session 2016 in Dallas, Texas was an incredible success. Nearly 600 dental students from every dental school in the U.S. attended. #WhatShouldWeCallDental shows we’re all in this together

woman using laptopEvery dental student knows that the four years of dental school are difficult and demanding. From testing schedules to clinical requirements, it is hard to find time to relax and unwind. Fortunately, a fellow classmate introduced me to a Tumblr page that kept me cracking up and helped me understand that dental students really are all going through the same thing.

The Tumblr page #whatshouldwecalldental provides an endless supply of gifs that explain exactly what it’s like to be a dental student. The videos contain snippets from TV shows, movies, or other content that has been posted to the Internet. Along with the gif, there is a description of how that video relates to a situation you might experience when in dental school or interacting with patients. Here are some of my favorites…

A ‘TAD’ different way to use media in your chapter

Danny ThumbWe’ve all used media in some form or another in our chapter. Promotion, event recaps or even simply for entertainment. But have you ever thought of using it to improve your public speaking skills? Neither did we.

I love public speaking, but I know I am in the minority. What I am not in the minority with, however, is wishing I were better at it. Ever since I was first elected into an ASDA position my D1 year, people have been asking me for opportunities to improve their public speaking skills. Until recently, I really didn’t know how to help them or give them those opportunities. Then one day, as I was pondering dental terms that I could use in ASDA puns (as I often do), it hit me—we can have our members give lunch and learn presentations. Thus, TAD Talks were born…

Instagram for dental practice advertising and branding

instaInstagram is an engaging way to capture moments and instantly share them through social media. Most people have a personal Instagram account to display their daily activities and likes. However, the social media platform is quickly becoming a branding and advertising tool for dental offices. The photo-sharing application can help dentists educate and entertain their patients, even when they are not in the office.

5 video accessories less than $100

Videos are still on the rise among chapters. YouTube channels are exploding with chapter and district videos and you better believe that people are watching them. From my experience, the difference between a high quality video and one that your chapter would rather not post can be as easy as having the right accessories to help you film. Below are five video accessories that you can find for under $100 that may help you take your videos up to the next level.

Fantasy football as a dental-school outlet

footballThe life of a dental student is definitely a challenging one to say the least. It is a juggling act that you perfect year-to-year as you encounter new challenges along the way. As a first year dental student, you are in a state of shock as you try to keep up with a new and demanding routine. As a second year dental student, you have new challenges as preclinical work gets heavier, you begin treating patients, and you prepare for part I of the National Board Exam. As a third year dental student, you still have difficulty but a completely new set of challenges as patient care becomes your primary focus. Then finally, as a fourth year dental student, it all comes to a close. You hope you have enough requirements to graduate on time and prepare to complete your final Board and licensing exams. Interestingly enough, I have learned that there is one thing that brings many dental students together regardless of year classification and that, of all things, is fantasy football.
