Media Monday

Miley’s tongue is a window to her oral health

For this Media Monday I bring you an article about none other than… Miley Cyrus. It seems like you can’t go more than 24 hours without hearing her name mentioned. What was the most popular Halloween costume this year? Just ask anyone from Paris Hilton to Kelly Ripa and they’ll tell you it was Miley. Of course no Halloween costume/Miley impersonation would be complete without her signature tongue. This tongue has inspired many web phenomena like this Tumblr blog and this twitter account.

But if you look closely this tongue could reveal a little too much about Miley’s oral health.

In space, no one can hear you swish

These talks are short videos that cover topics considered “ideas worth spreading.” Many of them can be applied to the everyday life of dental students. Here are a few of my favorites…

Tooth chiseling: not so strange after all

The word “chiseled” normally conjures up images of Abercrombie models sporting their hard-earned abs, but to the Mantawaian tribe, chiseled references a painful ritual that the women have long practiced to beautify their bodies and souls.

Last week, during my usual bout of pre-studying procrastination, a short video from National Geographic about tooth chiseling caught my attention. According to the documentary, the Mantawaian people, who live on a remote Indonesian archipelago, engage in physically tasking rituals such as tattooing exquisite designs to keep their spirits at bay. One ritual that the women have long practiced is teeth chiseling, which is every ounce as painful as it sounds and looks. Read on to watch the video of teeth chiseling…
