Chapter Spotlight: Minnesota hosts annual 5K for oral cancer research

Minnesota ASDA held its fifth annual Mouths in Motion 5K last month on the University of Minnesota’s beautiful Minneapolis campus. The clear weather offered a great day for a run, and about fifty dental students and faculty members participated in the event. Several students even brought their dogs along, adding to the enjoyment of the day.

Planning of the event started in July with the reservation of the race route, submission of the required permits, and application for sanction by USA Track & Field. Potential sponsors were contacted for donations to the event, and several dental offices, a dental supply company, and the Minnesota Dental Association gave generous donations to help make this event possible. Prize and food donations were also collected from local businesses. Finally, t-shirts with a custom Mouths in Motion 5K design were ordered for the participants.

As in previous years, all proceeds from the event go toward oral cancer research at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. Dr. Nelson Rhodus spoke to all the participants at the end of the race about current research endeavors in an effort to raise awareness about this life-threatening issue. Through donations and the registration fee, nearly $1500 was raised for the cause.

Minnesota ASDA is looking forward to continuing this great tradition and supporting oral cancer research in years to come.
