Yesterday, the FDA approved 9 new graphics for prominent placement on tobacco packaging. By September 22, 2012, cigarette manufacturers will no longer be able to produce packages without the new labeling and by October 22, 2012, all tobacco products sold in the US must contain the new labels.
This means that cigarettes are getting a gruesome facelift and in little over a year, consumers will not be able to purchase them without staring down the horrific consequences of smoking. It’s been more than 25 years since the FDA has revisited these labels, and many think it’s about time. In fact, the US is playing catch-up to the rest of the world’s labeling laws.
