The Alamo, Riverwalk, and ASDA! That’s what you can expect when you attend the Western Regional Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, Nov. 4-6. This meeting calls together all the great (student) dental minds west of the Mighty Mississippi to discuss hot topics in dentistry, share ideas to better our chapters, and most importantly, spread ASDA fever. (Fun fact: ASDA fever is more contagious than Beiber fever, and never goes out of style.)
Representatives from 22 schools will gather to hear the keynote by Dr. Jack Dillenberg, dean of Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. He will discuss the importance of leadership, how to be an effective leader and how your leadership will not only impact your own career but also your community.
Throughout the meeting, breakout sessions will cover hot topics of interest to ASDA members. The breakout session that I am most excited for is the curriculum vitae and portfolio builder session lead by former vice president of ASDA, Dr. Andrew Reed-Fuller. Dr. Reed-Fuller was in our shoes (with an extreme case of ASDA fever) just last year, and has gone through the experience of applying to residencies and specialty programs. At his session, he will guide us through creating, building and maintaining a competitive portfolio and answer questions about changes in the application process.
With all the talk about organized dentistry and personal development, the Western Regional Meeting is not to be missed. My favorite part about ASDA meetings is the ability to bring together diverse backgrounds and knowledge bases to benefit one another. The whole morning will be centered on idea sharing, networking and an idea exchange where you can fine-tune your chapter’s programming.
Nov. 4-6 is a weekend not to be missed if you’re in the Western region. On behalf of ASDA Vice President, Brittany Bensch, the Western Regional trustees, and the whole ASDA staff, we invite you to network, enjoy the spicy local delicacies and share in the warmth of organized dentistry with ASDA. If your ASDA fever gets a little too high, I’ll be sure to have some aspirin to help you out!
