Media Monday: Sayonara snaggletooth

When it comes to smiles of celebrities, words like “perfect” and “pearly white” usually come to mind. Images of glistening white teeth in flawless arrangement are the norm for those in the limelight.

However for singer-songwriter Jewel, the opposite is true. Or at least it used it be. Last week, Jewel tweeted a picture of herself on the set of her new movie as June Carter Cash, wife of legendary Johnny Cash, with a few cosmetic changes for her role including a noticeably straighter smile.

Ever since launching into the spotlight with her mega debut album, “Pieces of Me”, Jewel has persisted in keeping her crooked chompers. Her famous, or should I say infamous, teeth have become almost a trademark for her, even spawning a “Snaggletooth PSA” parody segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

While the change may seem significant, the dental treatment was actually quite conservative. After whitening, her trademark snaggletooth was modified by a simple crown placement on her right maxillary lateral incisor and esthetically contouring the surrounding teeth. This routine procedure creates the appearance of an aligned arch.

And although Jewel received a fair amount of press for her dental transformation, a quick google search reveals a surprising and humorous collection of before/after pictures of famous folk who’ve had a bit of dental chair time since rising to fame.
