During my interview at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, I remember talking about how playing musical instruments could help me in dentistry. At the time, I could not have imagined I would end up blending my passion for dentistry and music.
It all started on a breezy Arizona night while playing around with some chords on my piano. My friend and classmate Mark Anthony Williams II stopped by the house and started listening. We had tried to cover some songs in the past, so naturally I set up the microphone so he could express his witty mind. But what happened next was truly something special. As I was playing, I secretly recorded Mark singing about dentistry (that song later became known as “Amalgamator”), and it sounded like a real song! Thus our band, The Dental Anomalies, was born.
Amalgamtor became a big hit in our class, and this motivated us to create more music and eventually a CD completely based on dentistry. With the help from our classmate, the gifted Jason Thibodeaux, we continued to make other hits such as “Through My Loupes”. Eventually word got around and more people, especially upperclassmen, such as rocker Wyatt Lines and the talented Diana Lin, helped us record our final tracks.
Recently, Mark and I applied the same creative approach towards this year’s talent show. With recorded commercials, entrances, and short movies, we kept the crowd entertained. We even had live performances of our songs from the CD! To purchase the CD, please contact TheDentalAnomalies@gmail.com. All in all, I feel blessed that I can express my passion for dentistry through music. We hope to illustrate that while ASDOH students are great clinicians, it takes more than hand skills to be a great dentist.
