This year’s best article nominees & ASDA on Instagram

ASDA pubs InstagramASDA’s Gold Crown Awards ceremony is just around the corner! This is the Oscar-style even where we’ll honor chapter achievements, chapter media submissions and delegates who have contributed outstanding service over the past year. Two of my favorite awards are the best article awards. In years past, we’ve awarded authors for the best ASDA News award and the best Mouth award. This year, ASDA’s Editorial Board who chooses the winners decided to award one author for the best news story and one author for the best feature story. First, ASDA’s editor-in-chief and I looked through every issue of ASDA News and Mouth printed in 2012 to narrow the field. Below are the nominees for the best articles written in 2012!

Click the links to re-read the articles and tell us which you would choose in the comments below. The Editorial Board has tallied their votes and the winners will be announced on Friday, March 8 at the Gold Crown Awards during ASDA’s Annual Session in Atlanta, Ga.

Is there a link to the articles that are not attached to the magazine lay out? It makes it hard for me to read and navigate. I attempted google searching the article titles and authors but I couldn't find them (though I found similar ones).

That's too bad. Are you trying to read on a mobile device? If you can navigate to the title and click that, it should give you a "translation" page that's just text and easier to read. I found that Gregory Lane's article on “Comparing combined DDS and MBA programs” speaks to one of the important factors in dentistry, and perhaps one of the reasons many of us were drawn to this profession. When students declare why they want to be a dentist, some say that they like working with their hands. Others say they they enjoy helping people to feel better about their appearance. Others still like the autonomy of being a solo-practice owner and running a business. For the latter group, the MBA signifies mastery in all topics related to the running of such a business. And certainly, while an MBA may be taken separately at any time, combining the MBA into the dental program allows for an immersive approach to the education. Why some may argue the work experience would help, I think the fact that combined MBA programs have tailored their curriculums specifically to the practice of dentistry speaks a lot of the relevance of the education, and would most certainly offset this disadvantage. Overall, a very informative article with a realistic and systematic approach to tackling a little-known topic in dental and business education. A niche-defining commentary on what may come to be a new trend in educating dentists who look to run a health center or large-scale operation. A must-read for all pre-dental and dental students looking to increase their business IQ.

Thanks for the comment, David. I'm glad the topic resonated with you! If you enjoyed Gregory Lane's article, you may enjoy a piece he did for October ASDA News in 2011 entitled "A comparison of approaches to NBDE Part I" http://editiondigital.net/publication/?i=84495&p=7
