An inside look at working in public health dentistry

Think back to your personal statement for dental school. What did you say in it? My bet is that you mentioned something about your desire to help people. About how you knew a dentist somewhere who helped someone in a way that only a dentist could. About how that experience planted in you a desire to do the same thing. That one day, you hoped to be a dentist who not only did that for every one of your patients but also for the world! OK, so maybe you said it with more tact or with less drama, but I have read enough prospective student personal statements to know that a good number of applicants include that to some extent. Now imagine if that dream came true.

All I really needed to know I learned in Mr. Winchell’s class

Larsen_feat_FINAL A few weeks ago, I went back to my hometown for my little brother’s graduation. While there, I ran into one of my favorite high school teachers, Mr. Winchell. I didn’t get a chance to talk to him or even say hi because he was so busy running the whole audio/visual set up of the entire graduation. Although he knew that what he was doing was important to graduation that day, I don’t really think he knew how important it would be to his students for years to come.

A ‘TAD’ different way to use media in your chapter

Danny ThumbWe’ve all used media in some form or another in our chapter. Promotion, event recaps or even simply for entertainment. But have you ever thought of using it to improve your public speaking skills? Neither did we.

I love public speaking, but I know I am in the minority. What I am not in the minority with, however, is wishing I were better at it. Ever since I was first elected into an ASDA position my D1 year, people have been asking me for opportunities to improve their public speaking skills. Until recently, I really didn’t know how to help them or give them those opportunities. Then one day, as I was pondering dental terms that I could use in ASDA puns (as I often do), it hit me—we can have our members give lunch and learn presentations. Thus, TAD Talks were born…

5 video accessories less than $100

Videos are still on the rise among chapters. YouTube channels are exploding with chapter and district videos and you better believe that people are watching them. From my experience, the difference between a high quality video and one that your chapter would rather not post can be as easy as having the right accessories to help you film. Below are five video accessories that you can find for under $100 that may help you take your videos up to the next level.

Top 5 dental music video parodies of 2014

Shake it off screenshotThis year has been an exciting one. Some students were accepted to dental school. Some students graduated dental school. Some passed boards. Some did their first procedures on real patients. And some made videos.

I am a huge advocate for video—especially the type that UCLA ASDA is making as a part of their predental video series—but when dental school gets tough, sometimes you just gotta shake it off and break it down.

As the last Media Monday post of the year, I thought it would be appropriate to look back at all of the not-so-dental related videos that have been made and highlight the fun that can be had while in dental school. And so, without further ado, I give you the top Dental School Music Videos of 2014.

A video is worth a thousand pictures

We have all heard the adage that “a picture is worth a thousand words.” This saying refers to the idea that a large amount of information can be communicated through a single image. This concept is one of the reasons why I believe that PowerPoint presentations are such a popular teaching tool. Well, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then I believe a video is worth a thousand pictures—and at 30 frames per second (which is a standard frame rate in television and digital cinema), a 30 second video literally can be. The power of a video cannot be overstated.

Facebook advertising at more than face value

Sponsored Colorado ASDA Facebook PostEvery chapter struggles to some degree in spreading the word about an event. Reaching predental students can be especially challenging since they don’t usually have a direct connection to your school or ASDA chapter. Here at Colorado ASDA, we are no different. Despite our recent outreach to the predental clubs in the area, we were still only reaching a fraction of the potential students with our e-mail advertisements. With the first week of our newly organized Summer Pre-Dental Academy quickly approaching, this was not an issue that we could afford to overlook. So we decided to do something about it.
