It was a cold, blustery winter day in the city of Buffalo. I had just completed my first RCT on an extracted maxillary incisor as part of a pre-clinical endodontics course when I received an unexpected phone call. My normally calm brother spoke with a tremor: “Dad has liver and kidney failure.” Shaking and with tears in my eyes, I rushed home to Pittsburgh. Two days later, my dad passed away.
Where to begin? What do I do? I was a typical type-A dental student accustomed to having my life neatly planned out, but at that moment, I felt the exact opposite. For anyone who is going through or has been in a similar situation during dental school, I hope the following lessons I learned through the process of healing are ones you can connect with.
The daily life of a dental student is often about as jam packed as a crowded subway. Page after page, every day it seemed like I had a good and a bad experience. Some days seemed more balanced than others. But one underlying theme I noticed was that I always managed to figure things out. I always relieved the stressors so they wouldn’t hit critical mass. Nowadays we’d rather order food from Grubhub than make something ourselves. Our rationalization? Saves time. But does it? It takes 30-60 minutes for takeout to arrive and while you told yourself you would do the dishes or a load of laundry during that hour, we all know you sat on the couch and watched “Master of None” on Netflix. Let’s not kid ourselves. Ordering food is easy, making it on the other hand is hard.
ASDA’s February Wellness Challenge encourages you to face this predicament head-on. Eat only home cooked for seven days. I completed the challenge for this blog post and it was extremely difficult, but rewarding.
