weight loss appOn January 1st of this past year, like millions of others around the country, I made the cliché New Year’s resolution to eat healthier and trim a few pounds. Sounds familiar, right? But this time, things were a bit different. I had just finished my first quarter of dental school, and the dreaded freshman 15 that I had so successfully avoided in college hit me like a dormant ton of bricks out for retribution. All those free slices of pizza from lunch-and-learns definitely didn’t help my cause.

As if school isn’t enough of a challenge already, how can dental students strike the right balance between work, nutrition and exercise to lead healthy lifestyles while maintaining good grades? As I worked through my resolution, I found that these two goals, living healthy and doing well in school, go hand-in-hand in a surprising way.

happy coupleLong distance relationships are never easy, but the added stress and time commitment of dental school can make them nearly impossible. My boyfriend and I met a few months prior to my move from Manhattan to Buffalo, New York, for dental school. We went from living 12 city blocks apart to a daunting 400 miles. Over the past year, we have learned a lot and I am here to share five secrets to LDR success.

5 lessons my running injury taught me

Chicago marathonIn 2010 I ran the Chicago Marathon. It was my second marathon and I shaved nearly 20 minutes off my previous time. I ran for the charity World Vision, which was a blast, and I was on top of the world. About a week after I finished, my runner’s high started to wear off and the hip pain started to settle in. Soon the pain was waking me up in the middle of the night. At the time, I had no idea that this was just the beginning of a very long road. Turns out, I had torn the labrum in my left hip but wouldn’t be properly diagnosed for nearly a year. The injury was devastating and even after several rounds of physical therapy, I find that my left side is weaker than my right. I haven’t run distance since. Here’s what I’ve learned from my injury and the years I spent recovering.

Managing emotional wellness in dental school

Perhaps you’re a little sad that summer is coming to an end, excited to see classmates who have returned back for school, or confused already about an assignment or subject in a certain class. Feeling any and all of these things is totally normal! In fact, being able to identify and articulate your feelings is just one important aspect of emotional wellness.

It’s important to highlight emotional wellness as its own entity because it deserves as much attention as physical, intellectual or any other aspect of wellness.

The key to heading off serious issues is maintenance and regular eye exams. As future dentists you will tell your patients the same thing about dental visits and oral hygiene. I am going to try and touch on some of the key maintenance topics you can do to keep up your ocular health. I am doing this selfishly as I need my future dentists eyes to be working as optimally as possible.

When life gives you lemons, make lemon water! I’ve spoken to entrepreneurs who need to maximize their performance and I was surprised to observe they frequently drink lemon water to boost their mood and feel energized. After a quick Google search, there were several hits commonly under the names of ‘detox’, ‘energized’ and ‘morning rituals.’ I am a big fan of the tangy and sharp taste of lemon, but I have learned in college to think critically and evaluate the research studies myself. So I began to dig a little bit deeper!

runningEveryone says that the key to reducing stress is balance and exercise. Well, they’re right. Dental school is one of the most stressful, frustrating, and nerve-wracking times in our lives. Without some sort of stress outlet there’s no way we’d make it. For some people, it’s pumping iron at the gym, power cleaning at Crossfit, or zenning out with some vinyasa. For me, it’s lacing up my trusty Saucony’s and hitting the trails or the pavement. I began my on-again-off-again relationship with running in the 7th grade and feel that I owe many of my accomplishments to it.
