Dental students: The time to protect your future is now

Whenever I talk to ADA student members, I always stress the importance of enrolling in the no-cost ADA student members disability insurance as soon as possible. I’ve been working as an Insurance Plan Specialist for Great-West Financial long enough to know that having disability coverage while you’re in dental school is one of the most important ways you can help protect your future.

There are countless ways you could become disabled. Fall off your bike and break your leg. Slip on the ice and injure your back. A skiing accident could end your career as a dentist. You could also be diagnosed with an illness, such as cancer, that could force you to interrupt your education.

What if you became disabled? What if you became disabled and had to drop out of school for a period of time? How would you pay your bills? Your student loans? What if you could no longer pursue a career in dentistry and had to choose a different profession that might not pay as well? Can you see why having disability insurance is a good idea?

This coverage is a huge advantage while you’re in school — especially at no cost to you. Your student member coverage includes:

  • $2,000 a month for living expenses
  • up to $150,000 in student loan repayment
  • “own occupation” coverage — you’re covered even if you become disabled to the extent that you can no longer work in the capacity that you were trained and have to switch to a new profession

You’ll also have the option to convert your student disability insurance to the more comprehensive paid insurance plans for practicing ADA members — at exclusive member rates. You can convert to the disability insurance you’ll need as a dentist as early as January of the year you graduate. This allows you to focus on graduation and settle into your new role as a dentist with your insurance already taken care of through the ADA members insurance plans.

So, if you haven’t requested activation of your no-cost ADA student members insurance yet, do it now. Just visit insurance.ada.org/why to register your account and request activation of your coverage. Questions?
