We spend years learning how to prevent, diagnose and treat oral diseases, in addition to how to meet the continuously changing dental needs and demands of our patients and the public. Dental education is essential because it allows us to gain the necessary knowledge and technical skills to care for our patients. But is it really enough?

This time of year, many of us slow down (just a little!) to reflect. With Thanksgiving around the corner, our thoughts of family and pumpkin pie are interspersed with gratitude and recognition for what makes us feel special. I wanted to improve my skills after graduation in 2011. I had received my Bachelor of Dental Surgery in India and desired advanced training. I decided to apply to an accredited U.S. dental school.
The decision seemed simple, but I soon realized the amount of materials required for the application.
I created this video with the intent to encourage other dental students with families that it is possible to balance school life with family life. It can be overwhelming juggling diapers with crown preps. I do not have it all figured out, but if there is any wisdom to be learned from my mistakes, I hope to pass that on to others like me!
You know how every chef movie has an aspiring sous chef who admires the head chef, but the head chef either doesn’t have the desire or can’t seem to find time to mentor the sous chef? In this regard, the dental profession is no different from the food preparation profession.
Everyone talks about mentor relationships. Some people have them, but would like more. Some people would like to find just one. No matter how you slice it, if you’d like a mentor, you will probably have to do something to initiate the relationship. So how do you go about creating a mentor relationship with a faculty or senior colleague?
