Annual Session as an admitted skeptic

annual session 2015

This post was originally published in Vol. I, Issue 3 of Colorado ASDA’s newsletter, “The CEJ.” Chapter Editor-in-Chief Rick Collette recounts his first experience at ASDA’s Annual Session 2015 in Boston:

#ASDAFever

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve undoubtedly heard the term “ASDA Fever.” For me, it raised several questions. What is it? Is it communicable? Is it an actual fever? Where does one contract it?

This last question was one I was determined to answer.

A ‘TAD’ different way to use media in your chapter

Danny ThumbWe’ve all used media in some form or another in our chapter. Promotion, event recaps or even simply for entertainment. But have you ever thought of using it to improve your public speaking skills? Neither did we.

I love public speaking, but I know I am in the minority. What I am not in the minority with, however, is wishing I were better at it. Ever since I was first elected into an ASDA position my D1 year, people have been asking me for opportunities to improve their public speaking skills. Until recently, I really didn’t know how to help them or give them those opportunities. Then one day, as I was pondering dental terms that I could use in ASDA puns (as I often do), it hit me—we can have our members give lunch and learn presentations. Thus, TAD Talks were born…

5 video accessories less than $100

Videos are still on the rise among chapters. YouTube channels are exploding with chapter and district videos and you better believe that people are watching them. From my experience, the difference between a high quality video and one that your chapter would rather not post can be as easy as having the right accessories to help you film. Below are five video accessories that you can find for under $100 that may help you take your videos up to the next level.

The science behind mood-boosting cardio

runningEveryone says that the key to reducing stress is balance and exercise. Well, they’re right. Dental school is one of the most stressful, frustrating, and nerve-wracking times in our lives. Without some sort of stress outlet there’s no way we’d make it. For some people, it’s pumping iron at the gym, power cleaning at Crossfit, or zenning out with some vinyasa. For me, it’s lacing up my trusty Saucony’s and hitting the trails or the pavement. I began my on-again-off-again relationship with running in the 7th grade and feel that I owe many of my accomplishments to it.

And the 2015 Gold Crown Award nominees are …

ASDANews-Jan15-hero-webOn behalf of ASDA’s Editorial Board, I’d like to thank all the authors and bloggers who contributed to ASDA in 2014. Thank you for your time, your ideas and your contribution to the organization. It’s because of volunteers like you that we are able to build a knowledge-base for dental students in the U.S. And it’s because of you that ASDA News was found to be members’ favorite ASDA publication in a 2014 readership survey!

ASDA’s Editorial Board sifted through all the articles and blog posts of 2014 to narrow down nominees for three Gold Crown Awards: Best News Article, Best Feature Article and Best Blog Post. Criteria included relevance, originality, research and presentation. For blog posts, number of visits, social shares and Facebook likes were also weighed in the decision. Here are the nominees for the 2015 Gold Crown Awards for best articles and blog post …

Dental student receives award to do research at NIH/NIDCR

Screen Shot 2014-11-26 at 1.04.04 PM Like many dental students, I studied biology in college and did research and worked in a lab. Once dental school starts though, getting involved in an entirely new arena of research can be daunting and can stop students from doing it. Despite that, I still wanted to be involved. I believe that research is the foundation of all disciplines. Our field has been able to advance thanks to new innovations inspired by dentists, and dental scientists who dared to ask questions and pursued the answers. I wanted to be apart of that.
