This past April, as part of the ADA Dentist and Student Lobby Day in Washington D.C, 1,000 dentists and dental students went to Capitol Hill to lobby for the Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act (ELSA), legislation that would help children with congenital anomalies.
Marquette students share their voice at legislative day
Marquette University incorporates the state legislative day into its core curriculum, and this year, all D2s and D3s attended the event. Students joined forces with the Wisconsin Dental Association (WDA) to speak against the bill with one voice. Here are highlights from the 2019 legislative day.
Incentives for the dental team
Part of our job is to create confident smiles. How, then, do we make sure our staff comes to work every day with smiles on their faces? Front desk staff, dental assistants and hygienists are the backbone of any good office. We begin to understand this as students, since we tend to play the roles of scheduler, dental hygienist and dentist all in one. As we transition into dental practice, though, how do we make sure our employees are motivated to bring their “A game” every day? Here are three incentives dentists use to motivate their employees.
How to pack like a pro
There are two types of “packers” in the world: those who pack days in advance and those who do it the night before. Independent of when you start packing, the goal is the same — to show up wrinkle-free for a memorable first impression. Use the following techniques to make sure your clothes arrive as ready as you are.
Trump’s immigration policies and ASDA
In February of this year, your fellow students voted on an important policy update at ASDA’s House of Delegates. The resolution updated ASDA’s Policy E-4, Sensitivity to Diversity. Amid the flurry of a constantly changing immigration policy from President Trump, delegates wanted to take an official stance. ASDA delegates voted to include, “ASDA encourages the appropriate dental school admissions agencies to give equal admissions consideration to undocumented students with intent to seek legal permanent status.” This means that ASDA supports our diverse students and applicants without considering immigration status. Understanding the policy’s meaning and its relationship to the Trump Administration policy allows students to advocate.
My experience with refugees
April 7, 1994 was a normal Thursday for most people. But in Eastern Africa, this date marked the start of the Rwandan genocide. An estimated 800,000 lives were lost during the subsequent 100 days. As the genocide transitioned to the Congo, 500,000 Congolese citizens sought refuge throughout central Africa. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates there are more than 18 million refugees in sub-Saharan Africa. More than 3 million refugees have settled in the U.S. since 1980, and many are unable to access health care.
The Dental Brigades and the heart of the profession
As an undergraduate at Loyola University Chicago, I knew I wanted to enrich my education with adventure and community service. I joined clubs, networked with numerous people, and made unforgettable memories. Global Brigades is the organization that had the biggest impact on my journey. After volunteering for two international trips, I knew I had found my future profession.
