I’m so techie, you already know

techieI’m Daryn Lu, and this is how I work. I am a self-professed tech-geek at heart. I love tinkering, I love updating, and I love learning. My phone is dependably attached to my hip (yes, I’m one of those). I’m the type to tweak my LinkedIn profile for fun (yes, it’s that bad). While technology is not always a replacement, it can certainly be used as an adjunct to help enhance productivity! I want to share with you all some of my personal favorite apps and tech that I enjoy using on a daily basis.

Dental therapy dogs: a doggone great idea

l-Lap-dog.Patient anxiety is a long-standing challenge that every dentist will have to grapple with at some point in their careers. Different tactics to combat patient anxiety have surfaced over the years, but today the latest trend is that of the dental therapy animal. These trained and certified animals, usually dogs, are being featured at an increasing number of dental practices across the country, providing a sense of ease and comfort to the anxious dental patient, children and adults alike.

Dental student develops the job-finding site he wishes he’d had

I’m not an advertising executive. But my imagination stands to tell you about a website called Dental Potential. I had it developed during my senior year of dental school to help resolve the job seeking scenario many D4s find themselves in. I found it takes a lot of effort to find the right practice. A lot of this effort is unnecessary and leads to frustration. I imagined a site where dentists all over the country would post their practices and positions online so I could see them on a map, and filter out the ones that best suited me. It would be free for everyone. It would save everyone time. Most importantly, it would result in more dentists finding the right practice for them.

Help ASDA reduce barriers to care

84469760(1)This past April, ASDA members from across the U.S. came together in Washington, D.C. to advocate for improving access to care. ASDA joined with the ADA and a host of other dental organizations to urge our legislators to support The Coordination of Pro Bono Medically Recommended Dental Care Act (S. 466/H.R. 963). These bipartisan bills create a grant program to help meet the medically recommended dental needs of low-income individuals. Specifically, the program would give $2 million to fund health navigators to match patients with needs and dentists willing to perform the treatment at no cost to the patient.

The Gold Crown Awards include several categories and more than 45 awards. One section of awards is completely dedicated to media. These awards recognize chapter newsletters, websites and social media but they also recognize the articles members contribute to ASDA’s national publications as well. ASDA News and Mouth are rare among association publications. Many associations hire professionals to write their news and magazine but ASDA finds value in representing the dental student voice by soliciting volunteers to write nearly all of the content in ASDA News and Mouth (and this blog!). Read on to see the nominees for best news and feature article of the year.
