Advocacy engagement: Coming together while staying six feet apart

ASDA’s Annual Session in 2020 inspired me to take a more active interest in advocacy. At Annual Session, I saw students legislating and taking action that would directly impact thousands of dental students. This proved the significant impact we as students could have, and I hoped that I could use my experiences to create new events for Houston ASDA’s members that would inspire them as well.

Say something — anything: The importance of checking in

Zoom, Houseparty and FaceTime have certainly seen a spike in their number of users in the last six weeks. We’ve all scheduled a family happy hour or game night to keep in touch with our friends and loved ones. While I love a virtual glass of wine with my family, I’m reminded of the monumental value we have in being connected right now.

Here’s how dental students are staying well during the COVID-19 pandemic

Now more than ever, focusing on our well-being is essential as we adjust to our new routines away from campus. Over the past few weeks, I sought to find out what dental students around the country are doing during their social distancing when they aren’t attending class online.

Redefining our values while social distancing

During these times of uncertainty and anxiety, where we are forced to stay in and social distance ourselves, I’ve learned the value of self-reflection, living in the present and embracing the stillness. As dental students, our minds are always racing and preparing for the next big exam, practical or clinic. We seldom have a chance to soak it all in and self-reflect.
