Change is coming: Four reasons the licensure climate has changed

It’s a tradition: one Class II, one Class III, and scaling and root planing. Three exercises stand between dental school and practicing as a dentist. The single encounter, high stakes, live clinical exam is the most common form of obtaining licensure for a graduating dentist. This exam is just a snapshot of a candidate’s ability to practice on the public, yet it confers a privilege to practice on the public for a lifetime.

Start the new school year right: Jump into dental advocacy

As a first-year dental student, I had no concept of what it meant to be an advocate for the dental profession. And when I took on my first role as the University of North Carolina (UNC) ASDA chapter legislative liaison, I still had no idea. Having no one at UNC to help guide the way, I was overwhelmed. Luckily, a few months after starting the role, I attended the ADA Dentist and Dental Student Lobby Day in Washington, D.C.

Understanding dentistry’s role in combating opioid abuse

There is no shortage of news, facts or statistics on the opioid epidemic. As a dental student, you’ve probably been inundated with this information. ASDA’s Council on Advocacy wants to help you make sense of the crisis and the ways you can advocate for your patients. The council held an expert panel to assess the epidemic through the dental profession lens. Perspectives on organized dentistry, interprofessional efforts and legislative actions were discussed to help students understand the issue. Here are the key takeaways you should know as you begin to combat the opioid epidemic.

It’s not all about teeth: A communications webinar

Of all the responsibilities in the dental office, one of the most important is building patient relationships. The entire success of the practice depends upon the result of our ability to understand your patients as individuals, recognize and respond to their needs/wants and your ability to guide them to an informed decision that is in their own best interest. The dental school tends to focus on the technical aspects every dentist should have; however strategies on how to effectively communicate with patients isn’t always a focus in the curriculum.

Am I “non-traditional”?

WebinarI love hearing the word “non-traditional” because it gives me a little chip on my shoulder when I describe my journey to where I’m at today. When I first heard non-traditional, I thought it was a bad connotation and got a little discouraged from it. I knew when I graduated from undergraduate that I wasn’t immediately going to apply for dental school. Not by choice, but that’s how life is sometimes.

Non-traditional students have some great stories like this and ASDA will be hosting a webinar tonight at 7p.m. CT on “Non-traditional Paths to Dental School” to highlight some of the paths these students took…
