The Importance of Ergonomics

You’ve been crouched over your patients for hours. Your hands are starting to cramp and your neck is getting a bit stiff. You don’t really have the time to stop and go get a massage so you push through the discomfort and finish delivering the necessary care. Unfortunately this is a common response to pain. It’s a negative habit that can have real physical consequences in the future.

A 2016 study, which appeared in the European Journal of Dental Education, found that while most dental students know ergonomic principles and their importance, many found it difficult to put these principles into practice.

Due to the nature of your work, dentists are at a higher risk of being affected by musculoskeletal disorders. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders in dentistry most often affect the neck, shoulders, hands and back. These injuries can impact your ability to work and the length of your career.

If you’re in poor health, how can you effectively serve your patients?

A good, ergonomically designed operatory, along with daily stretching and exercise, can help dental practitioners and their staff enjoy long, healthy careers. The ADA Center for Professional Success has produced a series of videos that explain and demonstrate some easy stretches you can do in your office to keep you and your staff healthy. These quick exercises can be done in minutes practically anywhere. Take time to take care of yourself, your future self will thank you.
